Seventeen double bassists from around the world will be converging in the Canadian city of Victoria, British Columbia this coming Tuesday for a one-of-a-kind concert organized by their teacher, classical solo bass rock star Gary Karr.

The festivities are expected to include a rousing performance by this world-spanning double bass choir, a special duet by Masanori Ichikawa and Ayaka Katsumata of Japan and Karr himself playing in a trio with two of his students from Taiwan. Pianist Harmon Lewis, Karr’s partner in music and life, will also be part of the show.

The event, Basses Loaded, is part of the annual Victoria Summer Music Festival and serves as something of a grand finale for a month-long double bass training course called KarrKamp.

The annual training camp is something the talented Mr. Karr is eminently qualified to lead. His pioneering career has been instrumental in getting the double bass accepted as a solo instrument in classical circles. Since getting his start with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Leonard Bernstein in the early 1960s, he’s managed to perform solo shows with orchestras on six different continents. The double bassist’s work has been particularly popular in Asia, where his Japanese-released recordings have allowed him rocket up the Far East recording charts.

Karr’s also won numerous accolades for his work, including the Rosa Ponselle Foundation’s Bronze Medal and the 1997 Artist/Teacher of the Year Award from the American String Teacher’s Association. His double bass training methods have also been the subject of an instructional video, BASSically Karr, produced by the University of Wisconsin.

KarrKamp takes place over four weeks each summer at the University of Victoria’s School of Music. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature focused exercises, individual rehearsals and master class-style lessons. Karr pays special attention to honing his students music production and listening abilities. On Tuesday of the final week of classes, students show off their skills at the popular Basses Loaded event.

This year’s event will be staged at the University of Victoria’s Phillip T. Young Recital Hall on July 28, 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on the Victoria Summer Music Festival’s website.
