Green Day is back…with another music video, this time for their song “Back In The USA.”
The tune is one of two previously unreleased tracks to appear on Green Day’s latest release Greatest Hits: God’s Favorite Band, the other being a new version of “Ordinary World” featuring country singer Miranda Lambert. “Back In The USA,” is a classic Green Day pop-punk diatribe, offering the group’s saccharine brand of political commentary through lyrics like: “Let freedom ring with all the crazies on parade/Let them eat poison and it tastes like lemonade.”
Their latest video has Mike Dirnt and bandmates Billie Joe Armstrong and Tré Cool taking aim at the Trump administration with a cinematic send-up of John Carpenter’s classic sci-fi movie They Live. It starts out with the three of them walking around in what appears to be an old TV show set in 1950s suburbia. Then, Billie Joe gets some magic sunglasses from a door-to-door saleswoman that allows him and his pals see a twisted reality underlying their quaint American dream. They then proceed to sabotage a Presidential speech by a Donald Trump-like figure, revealing him to be a zombie-looking alien. Following that, they send the whole thing off by treating the stunned American public to a rousing rock concert.
