If you’re curious what might lie in store on Is This The Life You Really Want?, Roger Waters first new rock album in 25 years, you’re in luck. This weekend, the ex-Pink Floyd bassist  released “Smell the Roses,” the first song from his upcoming solo effort. (LISTEN BELOW.)

Clocking in at five minutes and seventeen seconds, “Smell the Roses” evokes a classic Pink Floyd sound, complete with guitar slides, impressionistic basslines and audio clips of ticking clocks and barking dogs. The lyrics, however, have a decisively modern edge; Waters is clearly taking aim at the turbulence of our contemporary era with lines like:

“This is the room where they make the explosives/ Where they put your name on the bomb/ Here’s where they bury the buts and the ifs/ And scratch out words like right and wrong”

We can expect more troubling ruminations on the album itself, which is slated for a June 2 release through Columbia Records. A recently released tracklisting includes songs with names like “Bird In A Gale” and “The Last Refugee.” (SEE BELOW). And a press release describes it as “an unflinching commentary on the modern world and uncertain times” and “a natural successor to classic Pink Floyd albums such as Animals and The Wall.”

As for musicians, besides Waters himself who takes care of vocals, acoustic guitar and bass, the album features: Nigel Godrich (arrangement, sound collages, keyboards, guitar), Gus Seyffert (bass, guitar, keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar, keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Roger Manning (keyboards), Lee Pardini (keyboards), and Lucius (vocals) with Jessica Wolfe and Holly Proctor.

Is This The Life You Really Want? will be sold as a double 180-gram vinyl LP (featuring a gatefold jacket) and a 4-panel soft pack CD. It will also be available in a digital format.

In addition to the new album, Waters will also be launching his upcoming Us + Them Tour next month. The tour will kick off in Kansas City, Missouri on May 26 and conclude in Vancouver, Canada on October 28.
