Asia frontman John Wetton’s struggle with cancer has forced him to cancel a string of upcoming tour dates with his band. Thankfully, however, the shows will go on thanks to the assistance of his pal Billy Sherwood, who sings and plays bass in Yes.
Wetton had surgery to remove a cancerous growth last May. Now he’s being sidelined, under the advice of his medical team, so he can undergo a new regimen of chemotherapy.
Because of these treatments, he’ll be pulling out of performances at this year’s Cruise to the Edge, a prog-rock cruise that takes place Feb. 7-11, and the first leg of the Asia’s upcoming tour with Journey, which is scheduled from March 15 to April 4.
“My good friend Billy Sherwood will fill in for me within Asia, keeping my seat warm during the initial 12 Journey dates,” Wetton said in a statement. “While I am naturally disappointed to miss the beginning of what I know will be an historic ASIA tour, I am intending to return to the stage with Asia later in 2017, dates soon to be announced.”
