Bassist Matt McJunkins and his compatriots in A Perfect Circle (Maynard James Keenan, Billy Howerdel, James Iha, Jeff Friedl) have released a new single, bleakly titled “The Doomed,” which will be appearing on an upcoming album. (LISTEN TO IT BELOW.)

Against a sonic backdrop that is hauntingly subdued at some points and abrasively intense at others, the alt metal supergroup disturbing spins parable with brooding lyrics like:  “Doomed are the merciful/ For the word is now death/ And the word is now without light.”

In a statement, lead vocalist Maynard James Keenan (who as many know also fronts Tool) said the song’s lyrics were inspired by the contemporary state of the world: “In light of this current difficult and polarized social, spiritual and political climate, we artist types need to open our big mouths and share the light a little louder.”

A Perfect Circle’s still untitled new album, their first since 2004’s Emotive, is expected to come out next year via BMG. The band is also set to start a 28-date tour of North America, which begins Saturday (Oct. 21) with a performance at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California.
