We’re happy to report that a previously unattainable Jaco live album is making its way out of the vaults and into the hands of fans.

This spring, Resonance Records will be releasing Jaco Pastorius: Truth, Liberty & Soul — Live in NYC: The Complete 1982 NPR Jazz Alive! Recording. Available for the first time, the album will allow fans to experience 130 minutes of high-fidelity music recorded during a concert by Jaco Pastorius with the Word of Mouth Big Band at Avery Fisher Hall in New York CIty on June 27, 1982.

A legendary figure, the late Jaco Pastorius revolutionized the music world of the ’70s and ’80s with his innovative and inspired approach to playing the fretless electric bass. The performance captured on Truth, Liberty & Soul was originally part of George Wein’s Kool Jazz Festival and took place not long after his departure from the influential jazz-fusion group Weather Report.

While a portion of the concert aired during a 1982 broadcast of National Public Radio’s Jazz Alive! program, the new live album features the entire performance, including over 40 minutes of material that never originally made it on the air.

Authorized by the Jaco Pastorius Estate along with the Warner Music Group and NPR Music, the recording will come with an 100-page companion booklet chock full of rare photos and article; the nineteen written pieces in the book include essays by Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, producer Zev Feldman, Jaco Pastorius authority Bill Milkowski, original recording engineer Paul Blakemore, as well as interviews with Jaco’s son John Pastorius, musicians Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer and Randy Brecker.

The upcoming album release has its origins in a 2011 meeting between Jazz Alive! producer TIm Owens and Zev Feldman of Resonance Records. During their get-together, Feldman noticed a piece of paper pertaining to Jaco’s 1982 concert at the Kool Jazz Festival and resolved to makes its release through his label a reality.

“I was really determined,” Feldman said, “to create the ultimate Jaco Pastorius package. Give it the ‘Resonance treatment,’ if you will. Something beautifully designed with a stunning book of liner notes packed with rare photos, essays and interviews with all the important voices that were part his musical world. It’s a big thrill for us to be able to present something so special, and we hope that the legions of Jaco fans out there will enjoy it as much as we do.”

The concert’s recording engineer Paul Blakemore, a multiple Grammy winner, was recruited to revisit and remix the recording from the original 24-track tape reels. The performance captures Jaco with the core of his Word of Mouth big band (Peter Erskine on drums, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Bob Mintzer on tenor sax, Othello Molineaux on steel pans and Don Alias on percussion) accompanied by a bunch his musical friends, including saxophonists Bob Stein, Lou Marini, Frank Wess, Howard Johnson and Randy Emerick; trumpet players Alan Rubin, Lew Soloff, Jon Faddis, Ron Tooley and Kenny Faulk; trombonists David Taylor, Jim Pugh and Wayne Andre; French hornists John Clark and Peter Gordon; and tubist David Bargeron. Harmonica virtuoso icon Toots Thielemans also appears as a special guest soloist.

Jaco Pastorius: Truth, Liberty & Soul — Live in NYC will be available first as a limited-edition 3-LP, 180-gram vinyl boxed set exclusively released for Record Store Day on April 22. This will be followed by the deluxe 2-CD and digital sets on May 19, 2017. The CD edition will include the 100-pg book companion booklet, while the limited edition 3-LP boxed set will contain the same graphic materials and writings featured in the book in a multi-page 12″x12″ insert format.
