Marketing mogul humbled by studio legend
Story by Jon Liebman | July 12, 2014
KISS bassist Gene Simmons is often referred to as a marketing genius, powerful media mogul and extremely successful entrepreneur. So what else can he possibly have to learn?
Plenty, actually. Watch this priceless exchange between Simmons and studio bass legend Carol Kaye, who, with over 40,000 songs and TV cues to her name, is perhaps the most recorded bassist in music history. In this outtake from the 2012 documentary Sample This (which happens to be narrated by Simmons), Carol is shown giving a bass lesson to Gene at Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood. Though the student appeared eager to learn, he required repeated prodding from the master, who continuously admonished him with, “You gotta do it with the beat” and “Up-down, up-down.”
Watch and enjoy.
