Ryan Martinie has definitely gotten out of the mud with his current project.

While he’s best known for ratcheting up the Nu Metal band Mudvayne’s tunes with his virtuoso bass playing, these days he’s taking his music in more of a jazz-rock fusion direction with his current outfit, Soften the Glare.

Along with his talents, Soften the Glare also features the skillful playing of guitarist Bon Lozaga (Gong Expresso, Tiny Boxes) and drummer Mitch Hull (Jacked Up). Lately the group has been spicing up their instrumental jazz-rock approach with aspects of metal, funk and prog rock.

They’ll be kicking off their 2016 U.S. summer tour on June 17 in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The Funky Lady Tour will take them to venues around the East Coast, Midwest and Southern United States, finally winding down July 22 in Sevierville, Tennessee.

If you’re wondering about the likelihood of a Mudvayne reunion, though, prepare to have your hopes dashed. In a recent interview with Billboard, the group’s former vocalist Chad Gray, who now sings with the metal supergroup Hellyeah, implied there are still too many tensions between his old bandmates for that to happen.

“If you want to do a reunion tour, you need all the members,” he said.

“I still love and talk to those guys, but it’s like being in a relationship and all the sudden things just start to fall apart,” Gray added. “Mudvayne was just dissolving. It became too much for all of us. It was no one person in particular’s fault. We all have faults.”
