The Eagles may be done for good, but thankfully their bass player Timothy B. Schmit hasn’t slowed down a bit. In fact, he’s got a new solo album in the wings, Leap of Faith, which he plans to release next month through Benowen Records.

A collection of his reflections on life, the new recording will feature a blend of rock, country, R&B and Americana with a little bit of reggae thrown in for good measure. Schmit sees it as a furthering of a process started on his previous solo release, 2009’s Expando.

“Again, I wanted to write this album on my own,” he says. “In any collaboration one has to make a series of compromises. That’s not a bad thing, it’s simply not what I’ve chosen to do with this project. I’m just putting it out there, and maybe some of these ideas might resonate with listeners.”

Although the vision on Leap of Faith is completely his own, Schmit doesn’t hesitate to bring some top-notch musicians aboard to help him with the project.

The bass and guitar player gets some skillful musical assistance from noted jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton on “Slow Down,” a reggae-flavored song about escaping life’s pressures, and Nashville-based session guitarist Paul Franklin fills out the traditional country sound on “It’s Alright” with some inspired steel guitar playing.

The album is co-produced by Schmit’s friend Hank Linderman, who also worked on Don Henley’s recent solo album and the Eagle’s last studio release.

“Over the last ten years or so, I’ve felt like I’m finally getting the hang what it is I do best,” Schmit says. “Although this project took some time to complete, this is what I came up with… This is who I am. This is a Leap Of Faith.”

Although Leap of Faith comes out Sept. 23, fans can begin pre-ordering the album August 26. Schmit will be presenting at the Americana Music Festival & Conference in Nashville on Sept. 21. He’ll also be performing two shows there next month, Sept. 22 at Factory at Franklin for the Music City Roots variety show (which will later be broadcast on PBS) and Sept. 25 at the City Winery.
