Where bass finally starts to make sense

Do you ever...

  • Struggle to learn songs on the bass?
  • Wonder how to use "all that theory" to actually make music?
  • Feel lost on the fingerboard, especially higher up the neck?

BG4 is the only program of its kind that shows you how to learn songs on the bass and understand music theory basics — all from a bass player’s perspective.

You’ll also learn how to navigate the bass fingerboard comfortably, without getting lost.

With BG4, you'll build confidence, play your favorite rock styles… and have a whole lot of fun in the process!

Who's This Course For?

Before I tell you all about the program, let’s make sure it feels like the right fit for you.

Bass Guitar for the Rocker in You is for someone who loves rock and blues — especially those classic songs from the ’60s and ’70s — and wants a clear, practical way to learn them on the bass.

This course is right for you if you want to know how to learn songs and understand the music theory behind all those notes.

And it's perfect for you if you’re tired of feeling totally lost every time you venture too far "north" on the bass fingerboard!

Does any of this sound like you?

1

You’ve picked up the bass on and off, but never quite clicked.

You may have learned bits and pieces along the way, but without a clear framework, it’s hard for anything to really stick.

2

You know some scales, and maybe a little theory, but you're not sure how to actually use them when you play.

That’s because theory is often taught in isolation, without showing how it connects to real bass lines and real songs.

3

You're comfortable on the lower frets, but you get lost when you venture up too high on the fingerboard.

Once you understand a few simple finger shapes, you can use them almost anywhere on the fingerboard — instead of feeling like you have to start over every time you move.

And if part of you is wondering whether you’re “too old” to learn bass, let's put that to rest right now. I work with students in their 50s, 60s, 70s — even 80s — who are learning new things, gaining confidence, and enjoying playing bass more than they ever thought they would!

If you can relate to any of those things, you're in the right place.

You're the exact person I had in mind when I created BG4.

After going through BG4, here's what will finally make sense:

MUSIC THEORY

You’ll understand music theory basics from a bass player’s perspective — so intervals, chords, and progressions stop feeling abstract and start making sense.

THE BASS FINGERBOARD

You’ll learn how the bass fingerboard is laid out so you can move around it with confidence — instead of feeling lost when you go higher up the neck.

SCALES... THAT ROCK!

You’ll learn how to use scales to make real music — not just mindlessly run patterns because you think you’re supposed to.

ROCK STYLES

You’ll learn the grooves and feels that define different rock styles — and how bass lines really work in each one.

LEARNING SONGS

You’ll learn a clear, repeatable process for learning songs — even ones you’ve never played before.

DEVELOPING BASS LINES

You’ll develop your own bass lines that sound musical, supportive, and right for the style you’re playing.

Here's what's inside BG4

MODULE 1: INTRO TO MUSIC THEORY – THAT TOTALLY ROCKS!

Music theory isn’t hard once you understand a few basic principles — and in this module, I demystify it all for you.

You’ll learn how “all those notes” actually fit together, how chords are built, how keys and key signatures work, and how the Circle of Fifths helps you make sense of it all — especially in a rock context.

Module 1 Highlights:

  • Intervals: It’s all about relationships.
  • Where do scales come from… and what are they for?
  • Keys and key signatures
  • Chords and chord structures for rock
  • Pentatonics: A huge part of the rock sound

MODULE 2: KNOW THY FINGERBOARD

No more feeling totally lost when you move up the bass fingerboard.

In this module, you'll learn how to master "shapes and shifts," all up and down the bass, taking advantage of the awesome consistency of the instrument.

You’ll learn how to nail every range between the open strings and the 12th fret.

Outside of a couple of exceptions (which you’ll also learn), if you can play something anywhere on the bass, you can play it everywhere on the bass. I’m going to show you how to do exactly that.

Module 2 Highlights:

  • The lowest (and arguably most important) range, including open strings
  • The in-between ranges
  • The upper range (the area you now think of as the "stratosphere" range)
  • Grooving all over the bass — with confidence!

MODULE 3: COMMON SONG FORMS IN ROCK

Have you ever had trouble trying to follow along to a song you don't know? Or worse, one you've never even heard before?

There are only so many places a chord progression can go. Building on the material from the earlier modules, here you'll be playing along with some of the more common forms in rock, which will prepare you for what you'll likely encounter in the real world.

What's more, you'll learn how to get the sounds of these chord changes in your ears, helping you predict where the song is likely to go next, with a lot less fumbling, guessing, and hoping.

Module 3 Highlights:

  • Rock-style blues
  • Various configurations of the I, IV, and V7 chords
  • Learning to spot flat-VII and flat-VI chords
  • Progressions with major and minor chords

MODULE 4: FEELS & FILLS

Sometimes, even though you're playing the right notes in the right places, you can just tell something's missing — but you're not quite sure what it is.

In this module, you'll get plenty of practice not only playing the notes, but injecting the secret sauce, including the "right" fills — in order to make the music feel amazing!

You'll seriously expand your rock bass vocabulary, too.

Module 4 Highlights:

  • Dotted quarter/8th note rock
  • Driving, "machine gun-style" rock
  • 12/8 Rock
  • Rock shuffles

MODULE 5: COMING UP WITH YOUR OWN ROCK BASS LINES

If you've ever felt stumped when you were called upon to play a tune you didn't know — in a style you weren't familiar with, then you're gonna LOVE Module 5.

Here you're going to take everything you learned in the earlier modules and use it to develop your own rock bass lines.

You’ll get some real, hands-on experience combining different song forms with different rock feels — and you’ll get a lot of practice reading chord charts, too.

Module 5 Highlights:

  • Rock-style blues
  • Progressions with variations of I, IV, and V7 chords
  • The I-vi-IV-V progression
  • Shuffles
  • 12/8 rock
  • Driving 8th-note rock

FAQs

I’m not sure this  course is for me. Can you explain who it's for?

BG4 is for someone who wants to play bass, but keeps getting frustrated when trying to learn songs, understand music theory, or move up and down the bass fingerboard without getting lost.

Whether you’re brand new to bass or you’ve dabbled on and off for years without ever feeling confident, this course will give you a clear, practical framework for making sense of what you’re playing — and why it works.

I'm not as young as I used to be. Can I still learn bass?

I love this question!

I don't know your personal situation, but I can tell you that playing bass is not nearly as physically demanding as most people think — especially when it’s taught the right way.

In fact, I've got students in their 50s, 60s, 70s… even some in their 80s — both men and women — and they love learning bass.

A lot of my students are also dealing with things like arthritis, tendonitis, back pain, shoulder pain… and they're amazed at how great they can make the music feel just by playing a super simple bass line.

And they're having a blast doing it!

I already know a little about bass. Will I learn anything new here?

I’ve been playing bass for over 50 years, and I’m still learning new things all the time.

Even if you already have a basic grasp of some of the material covered in BG4, you’ll almost certainly pick up new insights — or at the very least, a clearer and more practical way of looking at things.

And even when something is familiar, seeing how it fits into real musical situations can make a huge difference. There’s no such thing as being too good of a rock groover.

How long will it take me to go through this course?

BG4 is entirely self-paced. Some people like to move quickly, others prefer to take their time and really dig in.

There are no deadlines, and once a module is released, you’ll always have access to it. You can spend as little or as much time as you like with each lesson and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. There's no such thing as "being behind" with BG4.

Do I get all the modules at once, or are they spread out?

I'm glad you asked!

The modules are drip-fed. You'll get a new module every week. Don't worry, you'll have plenty to work on in between.

I’ve found that spacing things out helps most people absorb the material and actually apply what they’re learning, rather than feeling rushed.

There are no deadlines, and once a module is released, you’ll always have access to it. You’re free to move at whatever pace works best for you.

I'm not sure I want to spend the money. What if I change my mind?

A fair question, to say the least.

Investing a few hundred dollars in anything isn’t something to take lightly — and I completely understand wanting to be sure it’s the right fit for you.

Think of BG4 as an investment in yourself: learning to play music you love, gaining confidence on the bass, and having a great time doing it along the way.

And here’s the important part.

If for any reason you change your mind — or you decide it’s just not for you — let me know within 21 days and I’ll refund your purchase in full.

That’s my promise to you. It’s a no-risk guarantee.

And once you buy the course, you’ll have lifetime access, including automatically receiving any future updates or revisions.

You ought to give Bass Guitar for the Rocker in You a 21-day risk-free shot if you're motivated by any of the following:

Which one of these things motivates you the most?

YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY MUSIC, BUT NEVER MANAGED TO DO VERY MUCH ABOUT IT.

You've always loved rock and blues. Playing bass seems like fun, but you've never been able to get very far with it.

When you get together with others to play, it's awkward and frustrating, a little embarrassing even, when you don't know exactly what to do.

How badly do you want to change that?

EVERY TIME YOU HEAR ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS YOU SAY, "OOH, I'D LOVE TO PLAY THAT!"

There's just something about the music we listened to when we were young, and certain songs have a way of taking us right back to those special times in our lives.

How many times have you imagined how much fun it would be to actually play that music?

Enough times to take some action?

YOU'RE WISE ENOUGH TO KNOW THERE'S NO "PERFECT TIME" AND WAITING IS NOT THE ANSWER.

What has to happen in order for you to be totally ready to learn bass? If it's something you've wanted to do for a long time -- and I have a feeling it is! -- ask yourself what you're waiting for.

When you say to yourself, "I'm definitely going to learn bass, just as soon as...," how do you finish that sentence? And are you happy with the answer?

A note from Jon...

Your personal guide to learning bass—so you can do away with frustration and start building confidence and having fun playing music you love.

Jon Liebman

Back in the early days, when I was new to learning bass, I felt unsure about so many things—and it showed in my playing.

Today, with over 40 years of experience as a professional bass player, including countless shows, tours, gigs, and recording sessions, I learned a LOT – often the hard way – about what it means to be a good, solid bass player. I’ve since made it my mission to pass that knowledge and those skills on to others who want to play bass and have fun.

With 10 bestselling bass instruction books, a wildly popular website with over 900 exclusive bass player interviews, plus my highly acclaimed online bass resources, I’m privileged to have helped over 140,000 people learn bass, or become better bass players.

If you’re waiting for the perfect time to learn bass -- just like you’ve always wanted to do -- when will that time be? (You already know the answer to that!)

This course is the culmination of some of the top things I’ve discovered about what's really important when it comes to playing bass, especially rock bass.

It’s your chance to build confidence in learning songs, understanding important music theory basics, and getting comfortable moving your hand up and down the bass fingerboard, without feeling lost!

If that sounds like a worthwhile endeavor, Bass Guitar for the Rocker in You!  is just what you're looking for!

Come join me and I'll see you there.

Let’s play bass!
