Born in South Africa, Bakithi Kumalo has been playing bass for Paul Simon since the mid-1980s, beginning with Simon’s acclaimed – and controversial – Graceland album. Kumalo has also performed with Harry Belafonte, Gloria Estefan, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan and many others.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman caught up with Bakithi at the 2015 summer NAMM show in Nashville to talk about the recent Paul Simon/Sting tour, NS Design basses and more.
