Oskar Cartaya is an established bassist, arranger, composer and producer. A native of Puerto Rico, Oskar was a member of the popular jazz/fusion band Spyro Gyra for five years, with whom he toured and recorded regularly. He has also performed with a long list of music luminaries, including Tito Puente, Joe Sample, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Brecker, Steve Lukather, Tania Maria, Herb Alpert, Regina Carter, Willie Colón, Kirk Whalum, Celia Cruz, Alex Acuña and many others. Cartaya has also been a performer and writer for TV and films, including Showtime at the Apollo, the ESPYs, Latin Grammys and Jodie Foster’s Contact movie.

FBPO’s Jon Liebman sat down with Oskar to hear all about the making of his new record, Bajo Mundo, scheduled for release in early 2017, and the important role Oskar’s Kala U-bass played in the production.
