Dann Glenn is certainly one of the heavyweights of the contemporary bass world. A student of electric bass innovator and jazz great Monk Montgomery and close friend of Jaco Pastorius, the virtuoso performer, composer and educator is recognized for his adventurous use of harmony and distinctive personal style. A true Renaissance man, Glenn has released numerous albums, written symphonies, worked on movie and television scores, acted in the film Johnnie Be Good, taught with the Bass Institute of Technology, and authored several books–including his novel Almost A Proverb. He also played a key role in forming BangTower and the Eleven Eleven Orchestra, an ensemble featuring bass virtuosos Jeff Berlin and Baba Elefante and drummer Ronnie Ciago. Over the years, Glenn has also played and recorded with a list of blues, rock and jazz all-stars that includes Michael Bloomfield, Freddie King, Luther Tucker, Jeff Berlin, Jennifer Batten Casey Scheuerell, John Goodsall, Carlos Vega, Freddie Hubbard, Michael Landau, Lenny Castro and Percy Jones.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman met up with Glenn at the 2019 NAMM show in Anaheim, California to learn about his recovery from a serious hand injury, thoughts on fretless fanned fret basses and plans for a new band.
