Bassist and composer Robert Harper currently plays with the Maryland-based hip-hop fusion group Area 301. An alumnus of the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles, he rose to prominence around the turn of the millennium through his collaborations with funk pioneers Robert Wilson (The Gap Band) and Louis Johnson (The Brothers Johnson). A master of electronic enhancement, he’s known for his ability to juggle multiple effects pedals while remaining true to the traditional sound of the bass guitar. With his band, Area 301, he’s been honored with both Maryland Music and DMV Underground Arts Awards. Harper is also active as a member of the D.C. chapter of the Recording Academy
FBPO’s Jon Liebman spoke with Harper at the 2020 Winter NAMM show about musical origins, time with the Musician’s Institute and work with Area 301 including plans for a new album.
