Bunny Brunel is a bass player who needs little introduction to most jazz fans. The twice Grammy-nominated bassist, who hails from France, has played with some of the most well-known jazz musicians out there, folks like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dizzy Gillespie and Stanley Clarke and has collaborated with artists like Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder and Ziggy Marley. He’s also been a bandleader in his own right, plays in the fusion group CAB (alongside Dennis Chambers and Tony MacAlpine) and scores music for television and movies. If that isn’t enough, Brunel teaches music and designs instruments as well.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman had a chance to chat with Brunel at this year’s Winter NAMM show. They discussed musical advice, gear and Brunel’s new magazine, Virtuoso Bass, which explores the contributions of bass innovators.
