15-string “Kubo” virtuoso is taking bass playing to a new level

Kai Kurosawa started playing bass at age 15, after learning piano from his mom and dabbling with trumpet, trombone, and guitar. Today he primarily plays the “Kubo,” a 15-string instrument he developed, along with renowned luthiers Daniel and Michael Tobias. Kai received a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Fine Arts in Music degree from California Institute of the Arts. He’s been involved in all kinds of creative projects, working with various bands, playing everything from rock, pop, and jazz to progressive metal and electronic music. He currently lives in LA.
