Avery Sharpe is a name that elicits respect and appreciation in the jazz world. The Georgia-born bassist is well known for his expressive playing and his long-running association with late great pianist McCoy Tyner. He’s also served as a sideman for a lengthy list of jazz luminaries that includes Art Blakey, Archie Shepp, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, and Yusef Lateef. Beyond that, Sharpe has extensive experience as a bandleader, composer and educator, as well as a background that encompasses rock, funk, classical, gospel, and film music. He’s also the founder of the JKNM Records label. His most recent release is 2019’s 400: An African American Musical Portrait.
