Mavericks bassist shares no-holds-barred opinions on technical vs. real-world skills, “jazz attitudes,” and more!
Exclusive video interview with FBPO’s Jon Liebman
March 20, 2023
Bassist. Educator. Author. Ed Friedland really does it all. The NYC native may be best known for his work with the Grammy-winning band The Mavericks. But his musical resume includes artists and musicians from across the spectrum, including the likes of Larry Coryell, Michal Urbaniak, Robben Ford, Martha & The Vandellas, the Drifters, Steve Allen, and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, as well as productions like Little Shop of Horrors and Mamma Mia! His experience as an educator encompasses being on the faculty of Berklee College of Music, Boston College, and Arizona State University, and serving as a bass summit instructor with the National Guitar Workshop. On top of that, he’s a prolific author, who has written numerous books and created instructional videos for Hal Leonard Corporation. Friedland has also generated significant interest online through his YouTube Channel, The Bass Whisperer.
