When it comes to fusion guitar, you’ll always find Frank Gambale running far ahead of the pack. Perhaps best known his time with Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, the Australian-born virtuoso, composer and educator is also famous for pioneering the sweep-picking technique and originating his own style of tuning. Beyond that, he’s also won accolades for his work as a former member of Vital Information, his leadership of a trio rounded out by Stu Hamm and Steve Smith, and his prolific solo career. Most recently he’s been performing with his wife, the singer-songwriter BOCA, in their group Soulmine.
FGPO’s Jon Liebman had the pleasure of talking with Gambale about his new album and his recent reunion with Chick Corea’s Elektric band during a meetup at the 2018 NAMM show in Anaheim, California.
