James Jamerson was, undoubtedly, one of the greatest bass players ever.
Here’s a look at one of his busiest — and most awesome — bass grooves.
First, watch as I play the entire line, note-for-note. After that, I’ll show you some ways you can capture the essence of this groove, even without Jamerson chops!
Have you ever felt overwhelmed or intimidated at the thought of playing a song that you thought was way out of your league?
Well, it doesn’t always have to be that way once you learn to capture the essence of the groove.

WOW!!!! That bass line is more complicated than I realized!!!! Mr. Jamerson was an absolute genius who changed the way the bass is played, recorded, and mixed!!! Outstanding job John!!!
Thanks, Keith. Yeah, Jamerson was truly amazing for sure!
Truly one of your most inspiring videos Jon! Thank you!
Thanks, John. Glad you liked it!
Hey John, that was the first time I think I saw you play bass on FBPO. I was impressed. Though I am widely known on Cape Cod as an Upright player, I have a gig this month playing some sacred Paul Winter/P.. Halley/J. Scott, Chorale music in Falmouth, MA. which calls for electric bass. As a swing/Latin player, switching back to electric, I needed to find my straight 8 and 16th note grooves again. This video got me some great ideas. Thanks for the help.
Awesome, Rick. Thanks for letting me know!
Couldn’t agree more, Bel. Thanks for weighing in!
Great playing Jon, as always a inspiration to young and old. RTS
Thanks so much, Rob. Glad you enjoyed it!
