Hadrien Feraud

Video interview with 20-something French superstar bassist, talking about his brilliant career, past, present and future

Exclusive video interview with FBPO’s Jon Liebman
January 14, 2013

Born into a family of musicians, Hadrien Feraud began studying guitar at age 8, taking lessons from his father. Young Hadrien was actually more interested in playing drums until he received a copy of Jaco Pastorius’ The Birthday Concert CD at age 12.

Naturally, after hearing Jaco, everything changed. Hadrien immersed himself in the study of electric bass, analyzing the techniques of Christian McBride, Victor Bailey, Anthony Jackson, Skúli Sverrisson, Gary Willis, Matthew Garrison, Richard Bona, Linley Marthe and, or course, Pastorius.

Feraud’s talent as a bass sensation has become widely known throughout the world. Still in his 20s, Feraud has already performed and/or recorded with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Biréli Lagrène, Flavio Boltro, Jean-Marie Ecay, Mokhtar Samba, Jim Grancamp, Jon Grancamp, Dominique di Piazza, Thierry Eliez, Linley Marthe and many others.

Hadrien has been named “Rising Star, Electric Bassist of the Year” by the Downbeat Critics Polls and “Most Exciting New Player” by Bass Player magazine. FBPO caught up with Hadrien in Los Angeles at Bass Player Live! 2012.
