Born in Detroit, Michigan, Nate Watts played trumpet throughout elementary school and high school before switching to bass, upon the recommendation of friend and bandmate Ray Parker, Jr. The self-taught Watts took to the instrument very quickly, attaining the position as bassist with Motown legend Stevie Wonder after having studied the instrument for only two years. Nate played on many of Stevie’s classic albums, including Songs in the Key of Life, Hotter Than July, Woman in Red, and Jungle Fever.  He has also recorded with Harvey Mason, Sergio Mendes, The Jackson 5, Diana Ross, Paul McCartney, the Pointer Sisters, Lionel Richie, and many other music icons.  After a nearly four-decade run, Nate continues to perform and tour with Stevie Wonder.

FBPO’s Jon Liebman caught up with Nate at the 2014 Detroit Bass Day at the famed United Sound Studios.
