Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Phil Chen relocated to London in the ‘60s, where he became one of the busiest session players in popular music. Chen’s bass can be heard on Jeff Beck’s Blow by Blow album, as well as Donovan’s Cosmic Wheels, Joan Armatrading’s Back to the Night and countless others.

By the late ‘70s, Phil had joined Rod Stewart’s band, with whom he recorded Footloose and Fancy Free, Blondes Have More Fun and Foolish Behaviour. Chen has also performed and/or recorded with Jackson Browne, the Eurhythmics, Pete Townsend, Robin Gibb, Lita Ford and many others.

FBPO’s Jon Liebman caught up with Phil at Bass Player Live!, 2013.
