Sharing the limelight with some of the most memorable names in the music world is hardly an out-of-the-ordinary experience for Jon Button. Currently on tour with The Who, the veteran upright and electric bassist has toured and recorded with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Robben Ford, Michelle Branch, Shakira, James Blunt, Mandy Moore and Shelby Lynne.
A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, he began playing bass at just seven years old and by his early teens was playing in local jazz and blues bands, symphonies and orchestras. Button attended the University of North Texas, participating in the school’s acclaimed music program and playing with its Grammy-nominated jazz band. In addition to his high-profile touring and recording work, he’s also played in many commercial, television and film scores, including the Emmy-winning music for Batman and Beyond.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman spoke with Button earlier this year when The Who stopped in Detroit for a performance at Little Caesar’s Arena. Their conversation delved into his musical background, how he made a name for himself, thoughts on technique and the legacy of John Entwistle.

I noticed the first and third rh fingers were similar length in the 90’s. Stronger and faster too. You can combine traditional Fist and second alteration w first and third for fast stuff. It ain’t Billy but it’s pretty good.
