Latin bass groove master tells of his Peruvian upbringing, Paquito D’Rivera gig and Warwick basses

A native of Peru, Oscar Stagnaro is a highly in-demand Grammy-winning bassist, author and educator, specializing in Latin music. In addition to his long-running gig with saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, Oscar has produced concerts for Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Eva Ayllón, Larry Harlow, Jorge Drexler, Ivan Lins, Issac Delgado, Rosa Passos, Luis Enrique and many others.

Oscar is the author of Afro-Cuban Slap Bass Lines and co-author of The Latin Bass Book. FBPO’s Jon Liebman caught up with Oscar on the campus of Berklee College of Music in Boston, where Stagnaro has been a faculty member since 1988.
