Funky groover describes his longstanding gig with Scott Henderson, Xotic basses and growing up as the son of studio mogul Larry Carlton
Exclusive video interview with FBPO’s Jon Liebman
March 14, 2016
Travis Carlton was exposed to music from a very early age. Son of guitar legend Larry Carlton, Travis began learning guitar as a young boy, before switching to bass at around age 13.
Growing up in Hollywood Hills, CA, then moving to Lebanon, TN, Travis was drawn to rock and blues initially, before broadening his musical scope by adding jazz and funk to his repertoire. Carlton attended the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, where his teachers included Putter Smith and Ernest Tibbs.
In addition to performing in his father’s touring band, Travis has performed and/or toured with Robben Ford, Michael Landau, Sara Bareilles, Greg Mathieson, Jeff Babko, Toss Panos, Gregg Bissonette and many others. He currently records and tours as a member of Scott Henderson’s Trio.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman caught up with Travis at the 2016 winter NAMM show.
