Chiropractor/acupuncturist/bassist tells how to play – and how NOT to play – the bass!
Exclusive video interview with FBPO’s Jon Liebman
September 14, 2016
Randall Kertz is a chiropractor and acupuncturist in suburban Chicago, who also happens to be an accomplished bassist and educator.
After attending the Bass Institute of Technology in 1989, Randy worked in the music industry for several years in various capacities, eventually becoming a physician in 1999.
As part of his practice, Kertz has set out to help other musicians – bass players in particular – avoid injuries and other physical problems that often arise from playing an instrument. Kertz’s book, The Bassist’s Guide to Injury Management, Prevention and Better Health, addresses these very points, including expert advice and exercises courtesy of bassists Steve Bailey, David Ellefson, Putter Smith and Victor Wooten, plus interviews with Esperanza Spalding, John Clayton, Chuck Rainey and Lemmy.
Dr. Kertz is also the founder of Musician’s Health Resources, which provides multiple platform health education for musicians.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman caught up with Randy at the Lace Music Products booth at the 2016 summer NAMM show in Nashville.
