Pat Benatar bassist shares his thoughts on five-strings, musical elitism and pizza

You might call Mick Mahan a pretty solid member of Pat Benatar’s band at this point. The Youngstown, Ohio native has been playing bass with them for twenty-five years now, appearing the “Heartbreaker” singer’s last six albums and a great many videos too. Fluent in a variety of styles from jazz to funk, he’s also enjoyed a versatile career recording and touring with the likes of Alice Cooper, Sheryl Crow, Barry Manilow, Martina McBride, Alan Parsons, Keith Emerson, Glenn Hughes, Steve Miller, Sophie B. Hawkins, and The Dixie Chicks, just to name a few. What’s more, he’s also worked as an arranger with Prince on “Under the Cherry Moon” and was a founding member of Danny Seraphine’s band CTA (California Transit Authority).
FBPO’s Jon Liebman had a chance to sit down with Mahan to talk about being inspired by John Paul Jones and James Jamerson, why he uses four 4×10 cabinets and the connection between pizza and music during a recent Pat Benatar performance at the Sound Board music venue in Detroit.
