Are You Holding the Bass Groove?

Keep it solid, from the first note to the last

Getting a bass line under your fingers is one thing.

Keeping it solid all the way through… that’s something else.

In this week’s Essence of Groove video, I’m focusing on something that separates solid, dependable bass players from the rest: Consistency.

Not just playing the groove, but holding it — keeping the feel, the note length, the attack, and the energy steady from beginning to end. I’ll play a few well-known grooves and highlight what really matters when you play a groove — not just for a few seconds, but for the entire song.

And that’s where the real focus comes in.

The goal isn’t just to play the right notes. It’s to make them feel the same, from the first note to the last.

So whatever you’re working on right now — whether you’re playing with a band, at a church gig, or just on your own — there’s a way to make sure your groove stays solid all the way through. That’s exactly what this lesson is all about.

Let’s play bass!

I play bass with our ukulele group. The Mavericks “Dance the night away” is just 2 chords but playing a latin feel 4 beat really makes it, but as you say, it’s sustaining it for the whole song.

Sounds like fun, Keith. Thanks for the comment!
