Acclaimed sideman finally records his own solo album

Born and raised in South Africa, Bakithi Kumalo gained international acclaim when he was hired by Paul Simon in the mid-1980s to perform on Simon’s controversial Graceland album.
Over the years, Bakithi has also performed with Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, Harry Belafonte, Chaka Khan, Cyndi Lauper and many others, all the while maintaining the prized gig in Paul’s band, which he still holds today.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman sat down with Bakithi at the Kala U-Bass booth at the 2017 winter NAMM show in Anaheim, CA.
