Straight talk from bass virtuoso, on location at Kolstein’s Music in NYC
Exclusive video interview with FBPO’s Jon Liebman
January 25, 2016
Born in to a musical family, Charnett Moffett is considered by many to be one of the greatest bassists in the world. Widely known as a solid sideman as well as a bandleader, Charnett’s music cuts across many genres, including free jazz, bop, classical, world, rock, pop and other indigenous sounds from around the globe.
The name “Charnett” was derived from his father’s name, Charles Moffett, and jazz legend Ornette Coleman, for whom the elder Moffett played drums (Charnett subsequently recorded with Coleman, as well).
After attending the Juilliard School of Music for a brief period, Charnett left school to join the Wynton Marsalis Quintet, kick-starting his long and distinguished career as an in-demand bassist. Having appeared on over 200 recordings, Moffett has performed and/or recorded with a veritable who’s who of jazz royalty, including Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner, Tony Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Jordan, Harry Conick, Jr., Branford Marsalis, David Sanborn, Bette Midler and many others.
Charnett frequently tours with his acclaimed NeTTWork Trio and his solo bass project, Solo Bass Works. He has released several solo albums on Blue Note, Motéma Music and other labels.
FBPO’s Jon Liebman sat down with Charnett recently at Kolstein’s Music Shop in New York City to talk about life, music, career and bass.
