Do your hands hurt when you play bass? If so, you’re not alone. Sore hands, arthritis, and other physical challenges can make playing less enjoyable over time.

A lot of bass players have discovered that switching to a short-scale bass makes playing more comfortable.

In this week’s Essence of Groove, I take that idea one step further by exploring another option that may be an even better fit for some players.

Watch the lesson below, and let me know in the comments if you’ve ever tried one—or if it’s something you’d consider.

Comments on Do Your Hands Hurt When You Play Bass?

  1. I switched to a Ubass (Kala electro/acoustic changed out the rubbery strings for flatwounds) and I love it, so easy to play and great sound! I also play tenor ukulele, and my ukulele group recently asked me to be their bass player. It really adds alot and keeps everybody in time!

Sometimes small CAN be mighty! 😁 Thanks for weighing in, Jeanne.

  2. Keith Kennard says:

I gave up a long scale bass several years ago; as a lefty choice can be limited so an early Kala Road Toad electro acoustic was first; the intonation was terrible. Now play either a Kala solid body P model with flats or a Flight J model with roundwounds. Both a delight and recommended. Course you need a good amp and the Phil Jones range is ideal (one not much bigger than a shoebox and 80W).

Sometimes you need to take a roundabout road to find what’s right. Glad it all worked out, Keith. Thanks for letting me know!
