Bass legend reflects on the James Taylor/Carole King reunion tour and the making of Billy Cobham’s iconic “Spectrum” album
Exclusive video interview with FBPO’s Jon Liebman
December 7, 2015
Leland Sklar is one of the most recorded bassists in music history. Over the past four decades, Lee has performed on more than 2,600 albums with artists including Lyle Lovett, Phil Collins, Linda Ronstadt, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Peter Frampton, Ray Charles and many others. He has also played bass on numerous TV shows, including The Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law, as well as major motion pictures such as Forrest Gump, Kindergarten Cop and My Best Friend’s Wedding.
In this interview, recorded at the 2015 Warwick Bass Camp in Markneukirchen, Germany, Lee shares stories from the James Taylor/Carole King reunion tour — from intimate beginnings at the Troubadour to sold-out arenas — and the powerful connection those songs continue to have with audiences across generations.
He also looks back on the recording of Billy Cobham’s Spectrum, cut in just a couple of days during a time when, as Lee puts it, “there were no rules.”

Once again a great interview. I’ve always loved Leland Sklar’s sound especially his tone and found the interview both inspiring and surprised at his honesty and contributions to helping non-profit fund raising through his musical ventures. Always look forward to future interviews from “For Bass Players Only”!!
