Listen to Rubem Farias jam, and you’ll understand why the Brazilian jazz scene he comes from holds him in such high esteem. His playing crackles with an inquisitive energy that can get you thinking and feeling at the same time.

Over the course of his career, Farias has played and recorded with musicians like Filó Machado, Gilberto Gil, Toquinho, Nelson Faria, Bocato, just to name a few. More recently he’s been touring with Randy Brecker and Mike Stern, Balaio Quartet, Freedoms Trio and his own Rubem Farias Big Band.

At this year’s Winter NAMM Show, FBPO’s Jon Liebman sat down with Farias to learn more about his musical origins, current projects, admiration for Jaco and Victor Wooten and thoughts on developing as a player.
