A native of Tokyo, Tetsuo Sakurai began playing bass at age 13 and has never looked back. Well known for his longtime associations with the bands Casiopea and Jimsaku, Tetsuo has released nearly 50 albums.

A master of many styles of bass playing, most notably funk and slapping, Tetsuo Sakurai has performed and/or recorded with a seemingly endless list of high profile music acts, including: Al Kooper, Jeff Baxter, David Sanborn, Nathan East, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Bob James, Harvey Mason, Level 42, Paulinho Da Costa, Lee Ritenour, Neil Stubenhaus, Vinnie Colaiuta, Oskar Cartaya, Jerry Hey, Larry Graham, Toots Thielemans, Lincoln Goines, Dennis Chambers, Greg Howe, Marty Friedman, Dave Valentin, Marcus Miller and many others.

FBPO’s Jon Liebman sat down with Tetsuo at the 2016 Warwick Bass Camp in Markneukirchen, Germany, to talk about career highlights, past, present and future.
