There’s Always Plenty of Humility To Go Around

September 27, 2018

We’ve all seen people attain a certain stature in their chosen professions, only to become so “full of themselves” that they detract from the glory we want to bestow upon them.

Why do people let their egos get in their way? I’ve always thought the ones who display an unseemly bravado actually have very little self-esteem. They act like jerks only because of some internal defense mechanism they rely upon to feel important.

While the jerks, unfortunately, tend to get talked about more than the “nice guys,” there are a lot of successful people who are very secure with themselves and don’t feel a need to let everyone know how wonderful they are.

In this week’s interview, Wayne Newton bassist Matt Hayes talks about how his boss is, emphatically, not one of those elitist jerks. Wayne, according to Matt, doesn’t feel the need to set himself apart from the band, or act like a big star. He “goes as far as he can to please every single person,” says Matt. Including the band. “He treats us really well,” Matt continues. “He’s an awesome guy. You’re not just ‘the band,’ you know; you’re his friend.”

Those of us who have worked as professional musicians have encountered plenty of people on both ends of the spectrum. It’s good to hear that Wayne is on the “good” end, particularly when considering the enormity of his celebrity stature.

There are plenty of people who’ve helped me over the years without expecting anything in return. I mean, come one, Leland Sklar doesn’t need meAbraham Laboriel doesn’t need me. The same can be said for Tom HamiltonMarcus MillerRobert TrujilloVictor WootenRon Carter and hundreds of other bass players I’ve interviewed over the years (I don’t think Paul McCartney was in search of a career boost either).

Whether it’s music, business, medicine, sports or any other field, it’s important to stay humble, no matter how much of a “big deal” you are (or think you are). It’s just the right thing to do.

Want to share a thought about a “doesn’t have to be a nice guy, but is” bass player (or other celebrity)? Feel free to leave a comment.

In the meantime, check out my interview with Matt here.

Wayne Newton is a dRump supporting racist. Google him if you think I’m lieing. I will not patronize a bigoted racists like Newt, Turd Nugget, and Kid Rat. These are not your typical conservatives (whom I have no problem with), but right wing extremists prone to violence and the destruction of democracy. Be aware! This guy is NOT your friend!
